This book is for anyone who has ever felt afraid to try something new. Whether that be exploring new lands, embracing public speaking or following their dreams!

Sometimes fear wants us to lock up our talent and potential and keep it hidden away from anyone and everyone in a misguided attempt at keeping us safe.

Holding us back from sharing our voice, holding us back from sharing our ideas, holding us back from making new friends, exploring new lands, trying new career paths even following our dreams.

Holding us back and holding us back and holding us back, again and again, over and over in big and small ways, every day.

But what if we stopped letting that happen, What if we demanded that our fear stay small and silent and hidden instead? What if we believed in ourselves and our radiance and our brilliance and our magic? What if we stood up to fear, stepped over fear, silenced fear and then went ahead and followed our dreams anyway?

This book is a collection of inspiring stories from women around the world who have done just that! They’ve embraced the courage to silence their fear and are not afraid to realise their potential, follow their dreams and create a positive impact in the world.

Bethany Chambers
www.merrygoroundtoys.com.au

I have had a very tumultuous life commencing when my mother and Step Father absconded with me
interstate at 9years old. My father unawares attended my piano lesson for his scheduled time with me,
only to be informed I wasn’t there. I experienced homelessness as a young teenager, on the streets of
Melbourne, enduring assault and the need to steal to survive. I was lost, until community assistance
found me accomodation and gave me options. I repaid this with years of volunteering until I later
fought hard for my dream career as a Police Officer, with a strong focus with disengaged youth. After
8 years of service, a routine hernia repair operation changed my life forever.

My medical journey has been a veritable roller coaster where I have endured over 28 procedures with
a myriad of complications. The repercussions are that I now live in constant pain with numerous
chronic illnesses including fibromyalgia as well as a physical disability, every day is a battle against
my body. The loss of my career, the strong capable and confident woman I once was, a distant
memory.

Adjustment took time, as did gaining some semblance of management of my many chronic
conditions, which continue to impact my day to day life. I have had 3 hernia mesh implants within my
abdomen which have caused permanent nerve damage. With chronic pain as my constant companion
there was no surprise that I would struggle with my mental health as well. I felt that I was a burden, an
unnecessary complication in the lives of the ones I loved. With help I learnt that this was a time and
type of grieving, what had been lost was monumental and what our new “normal” landscape depicted
now so different. Throughout this time of adjustment and understanding of my health, despite the
reality of it declining I started toying with an idea.

Merry Go Round Toys’ was born in 2023 despite me having our logo commissioned 5 years
previously the timing was now ripe. Merry Go Round Toys keeps developmental tools accessible and
affordable, counteracting the troubling trend of such items becoming luxury goods. Our approach
efficiently capitalizes on the circular economy concept, where products are given new life, and buyers
are assured of items’ completeness and condition without harmful chemical usage. Presently no-one
else is addressing the fact that 80% of preloved childrens toys end up in our landfill, oceans or
incinerated. To be replaced with poor quality cheaply made items which only compound the issue
with their manufacture and over supply.

Merry Go Round Toys is more than just a toy retailer but a business underpinned with a strong ethos
partnering with organisations like Redland Bay Men’s Shed, Share the Dignity and Houses of Hope
program. With the inclusion of toy packs for children in vulnerable housing situations, volunteering
and monetary donations, We have ambitiously elevated our role from a mere retailer to a key
supporter of our community’s well-being.

This self devised Social Enterprise has adopted a strong stance and ethos of support for our
environment with a social focus. We are blessed to have a variety of supporters whom actively donate
toys straight to Merry Go Round Toys. As we don’t have a consignor to share the proceeds with, Part
proceeds are returned to Bayside Salvation Army or Share the Dignity in the form of a donation. We
also work closely with our Mens shed whom provide quality toy repairs and beautiful handmade items
for us to resell.

Merry Go Round Toys although only just in our second year have gained a dedicated following and
attention. I was a finalist for a 2023 Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award and managed
to clinch the coveted Business Excellence Award for Innovation and Sustainability. 2024 we exploded
onto the global stage with a Global Recognition Award for our innovative approach to sustainable
retail in the children’s toy market. In addition the prestigious and coveted Women Changing the
World – GOLD award for social enterprise, along with Ausmumpreneaur awards in the regions of
Social Enterprise and Disabled Business Excellence. Bethany is being recognised as a passionate and
focussed speaker and proud disabled advocate of resilience coupled with compassion.

Liz Courtney
www.linkedin.com/in/liz-courtney-72742919

I am Liz Courtney. I used to walk the executive floors in stilettos in the advertising industry, but I traded my life of comfort, to embrace a calling to direct and film one of the world’s largest climate series ‘The Tipping Points of Climate Change’.  It didn’t just happen overnight! My sliding door moment was a few years ago, when after the successful sale of a communication and marketing agency (where I was a partner), I found the space I needed to consider what next?

I knew I wanted to do something purposeful with my life to make a difference, and so concerned with the future of my three young children, I decided to shift my writing and creative skills to film and documentaries. I wanted to focus on important stories about human endeavor and climate change. I thought it couldn’t be that hard, just a slight step to the left!

My first documentary was a baptism of fire. While it was only a 30 min program, it was required in two languages! Next up, I secured a prime-time series with a different network following a story in New York, about two aspiring writers trying to launch a show on Broadway.  But instead of the happy ending, it required a total pivot like a phoenix rising from the ashes. However, when I was given the opportunity to direct a documentary in Antarctica, with 40 teenagers as part of the United Nations Year of Youth, my initial answer was ‘no’……Why?

I tried to trick myself, ‘who would do the daily school run, pack the lunchboxes, coordinate the after-school sports schedules’ I asked? However, when I looked in the mirror, I realized it was my fear of the challenge, sailing the high seas across the infamous Drake Passage that was playing with my mind.  Was I going to let fear define my life? Luckily, I decided to put my fear aside to embark on this expedition, one that would go on to define my life forever. I refer to this as my sliding door moment. And yes, we did get caught in a massive storm on the homeward leg of the Drake passage. Yes, I did call home and say I don’t think we are going to make it. Yes, waves were breaking across the bridge and over the top of the ship, as we dropped and dived 10-20 meters.

However, the teenagers on the deck were not scared, they thought this wild ride through the storm was better than any ride at Disney World! I took a leaf out of their perspective, changed my viewpoint, and finally went to sleep – albeit with a seatbelt across my bed to ensure I was not thrown across the cabin!  From this moment forward, I realized fear was really a figment of my mind.  I decided to live my life, not to be controlled by fear, but to override this switch in my mind, to travel to remote locations on the planet where climate scientists were tracking and recording the pace of climate change.

My stilettos moved to a new storage area in my wardrobe, and my boot collection became quite interesting!

Following the film Cool School Antarctica I developed a major 6-part series The Tipping Points of Climate Change, working alongside a group of brilliant climate scientists to write and direct this global series. Over 4 years, I explored the elements of our climate system which drive the ocean, the weather, food and water security, biodiversity and so much more, to understand what the tipping points of the climate system really are and how close we could be to irreversible change.

It was a huge undertaking.  Local television networks told me it was a massive series to try to get off the ground, and they doubted I could raise the funds needed. I realized that their ‘no’ fueled my determination, and I headed to the US to pitch the series. With two call backs, the first major investor was confirmed.  This created a domino effect, and the other 7 broadcasters came on board. This was a big achievement, raising over $2.5 million, but the gems were really in the journey. I hope my story will inspire you to move past your little voices of doubt, step out of your comfort zones, embrace the never-ending journey of self-discovery, and pursue the passions that make your heart sing. But even more importantly, I encourage you to be an example for the next generation who are going to become the new caretakers of our precious planet Earth.

Over the following pages, I will share the key principles that have enabled me to transform my life, embarking on new adventures while preserving what I hold dear. These principles aim to inspire and re-frame the challenges, fears, and limitations you might face as you step out of your current life and into the one you feel ‘called to live’. I hope to invoke the Fearless Walter- Mitty that is in all of us!
